OUR CARTOON PRESIDENT | ART DIRECTION
As the Art director on Showtime’s Our Cartoon President, I played a key role in recruiting, training, directing and managing the design department. For the first season we produced seventeen half-hour episodes and a longer, Election Special 2018, special feature.
The art direction aims to capture the dichotomy between the vastly unqualified individuals and the high offices they occupy. Environments are exaggerated in scale, bathed in dramatic lighting, and rendered in a painterly style to amplify their grandeur. Characters are designed to emphasize the unsettling one-dimensionality of the real-life subjects and rendered in a comic style to contrast the dignified settings.
Expanding on co-creator Tim Luecke’s artwork, I led the development of the show’s style and established an efficient workflow to ensure that all artists consistently created high quality assets on schedule and achieved the show’s creative goals and technical requirements. Additionally, I designed many characters, created 3D layouts, and provided guidance via draw-overs and critiques to direct the creation of the characters, props, and environments. Below are examples of the artwork my design team and I created for the first season of the show.
I worked with my design team to create these three posters, which were used to promote the show in outdoor advertising (billboards, subway, etc.), print media (newspapers and magazines), as well as digital advertising.
