VERIZON | ORIGAMI

This was a memorable project for me. I directed this spot when I worked at R/GA, with some of my favorite collaborators. I find working in stop-motion is uniquely satisfying, partially because it reminds me of playing with toys as a kid. But on this particular shoot, there was a bonus reason for nostalgia — I got to collaborate with my big sister! Zhenia is a master paper engineer, usually focused on pop-up books and cards (yaypapercuts.com). This project allowed us to combine paper craft with animation.

My team and I carefully planned out all the character and camera motions in 3D previs during pre-production, then animated the spot in stop-motion with actual paper origami-style characters and finished the production process with visual effects compositing, where we cleaned up and manipulated the live action footage to address imperfections and added some secondary motions to the characters.
